Up Youur Self Confidence Levels

WRT...THE HINDU(22/08/2010)

In an old movie, a timid king had to fight his enemies. A priest gives him an idol to preserve it in his clothes for an assured victory. The king wins the battle but finds that he had lost the idol while fighting. He realises that it is the faith that gave him the victory and not the idol.

Self-confidence is the assuredness of your ability and personal judgment. It is something you ‘act' on, not something you learn from. There are a few practical exercises to help you to overcome this deficiency. For example, when you are suffering from chronic inferiority complex, change your circle of friends. They are the people who always want to give you suggestions, indirectly making you believe that they are ‘above' you. Note that others make you feel inferior only if you allow them to do that.

Most confident people also have insecurities. Building confidence involves two steps. Realise where you currently are; and question yourself, why should you believe your reasoning? Secondly, understand where you want to be and what beliefs you will need to get there. Identify the reasons and insecurities that make you feel inferior. Go to the root of the problem.

Inferiority is a state of mind in which you declare yourself a victim. When you attend a meeting, do you sit in the back seat though front rows are vacant, as we find it with many students in rural areas? Identify your success areas to gain confidence. Change your behavioural patterns.

While talking, if you are not able to look straight into the opposite person's eyes and avoid his looks, it shows your fear or guilt. Look straight. Don't look down at your finger nails or move your hands too often denoting your tension or insecurity.

Do you know that your body language has a great effect on your confidence level? Raise your shoulders and your head, walk faster than what you are habituated to and see how it boosts your confidence levels just in a few days.

Whenever opportunity permits, laugh loudly. A loud laugh drives away your inhibitions. Remember the old American saying, “Go out into the world and sing as if no one is listening, dance as if nobody is watching and you will start enjoying your presence”.

THE FINAL INSPECTION

FWD Mail:

The soldier stood and faced God, Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, you soldier, how shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?"

The soldier squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns, Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent, because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place, among the people here.
They never wanted me around, except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much, but if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne, where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly, for the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, you soldier, you’ve borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets; you’ve done your time in Hell."

A Reason to SMILE

With Ref... to THE HINDU-(09-08-2010.)

The girl sitting opposite to him smiled and the young boy was enthralled by the captivating dimple on her cheek. He immediately gave his consent to his elders and within three months they got married. On arrival at the in-law's house, the girl ceased to smile whilst adjusting to the new surroundings. The boy cheered her to be original and joyful. He told her that it is her smile that it major reason for their marriage.

Quoting this example, the motivator said: “If the smile of a girl whom you have known for just three months is so gorgeous, how beautiful your smile should appear to you in the mirror?” Amidst claps from the audience he concluded, “A neurotransmitter called serotonin is released in the brain that keeps us energetic.

Have you noticed the unique quality of great people like Abdul Kalam, Mother Theresa and Manmohan Singh? The reason for their energy is the everlasting smile on their faces”.

Keep smiling

‘A smile is a curve that sets everything straight' is an old saying.

Then why do some people hardly smile? People having no cordial relationships with themselves, their family members, those who are not happy with their job routine or those in financial crisis etc won't be able to smile.

Some people are habituated to be always serious without any specific reason.

A smile is a facial expression formed by flexing the mouth muscles to express happiness.

When it is expressed with eyes it is called Duchene smile. Sometimes a smile can also be an involuntary expression of anxiety, otherwise called grimace.

A fake smile can make you look phony, nervous, or even dangerous.

Can a smile be practiced? Certainly yes.

Immediately on waking up, get in front of a mirror and practice smiling looking at your face.

Looks funny, but if you continuously practice for a month, you find the difference.

To get your eyes to smile, cover the lower part of your face with a piece of paper, concentrate only on your eyes and with practice, you'll be able to smile with your eyes at will.

A smiling face gives pleasant feelings to the onlooker. As you hum when you are alone while bathing, shaving or cooking; practice smiling whenever you remember it. And finally, if you smile when no one else is around, you really mean it.
